One in nine people who ordered a free HIV self-test as part of a pilot project run by the Swiss AIDS Federation had never previously been tested for HIV. An accompanying study shows that anonymous and free self-tests break down barriers to access. They are therefore a key piece of the jigsaw in achieving the Federal Council’s ambitious goal of eliminating new HIV infections by 2030.

National and global austerity measures are jeopardising the progress that has been made.
