With antiretroviral therapy, most people living with HIV can have a near-normal life expectancy. Blanket refusal of life insurance for people living with HIV is therefore no longer justified.

Can people living with HIV take out life insurance?

An application for life insurance from an HIV-positive person will be rejected outright in most cases. This is despite the fact that the life expectancy of people living with HIV is now almost the same as that of the general population, thanks to antiretroviral medications. Blanket refusal of life insurance for people living with HIV is therefore no longer justified. This has also been shown in studies, including ones conducted by Swiss Re. Some insurers now offer the possibility of taking out life insurance if the individual’s health status meets certain criteria set by the insurer (e.g. timing of infection, CD4 count, viral load, no hepatitis C co-infection).
