Improving the quality of life of people living with HIV

Comorbidities: mental health, cardiovascular difficulties, neurological disorders, substance abuse (problems) and neoplasms.

People living with HIV (PLHIV) are living longer and longer. To further improve the health-related quality of life of PLHIV, it is also important to understand which comorbidities are prevalent. The study presents common comorbidities from focus groups consisting of healthcare professionals in Spain.

The most common comorbidity is mental illness, followed by cardiovascular and neurological diseases. In some regions of Spain, substance use was in 3rd place.

Mental health is ranked first as an impairment of PLHIV. Improving their quality of life (QoL) should include these comorbidities in the longer term or, if possible, have them on the radar as a medical intervention.
